Cough is body’s reflex defense against foreign bodies of phlegm collecting in respiratory tracts (trachea, larynx and bronchi). Cough does not always mean a person is ill. It may happen when breathing in dust, smoke or gases. 

Reasons for Cough

  • Foreign bodies or irritants get into upper respiratory tracts
  • Abnormalities in ear, nose and throat
  • Abnormalities in alimentary canal (esp. GERD)
  • Abnormalities in respiratory organs
  • Emotional excitement

Cough Related Disorders

  1. ENT diseases (tracheitis, laryngitis, bronchitis)
  2. Bronchial pneumonia
  3. Dry pleurisy
  4. TB
  5. Upper respiratory tract cancer, bronchial cancer, upper airways narrowed by metastatic tumors
  6. Bronchial asthma
  7. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  8. Taking some medicines
  9. Infections (whooping cough)
  10. Ascariasis, pulmonary actinomycosis
  11. Genetic disorders (cystic fibroids)


Cough is a symptom that a disease cannot be clearly diagnosed by. Checkup procedures with diagnostics tests are to be done. They include:

  1. Sputum analysis
  2. Blood test
  3. Bacterioscopy of sputum
  4. Chest x-ray
  5. Bronchography
